Jessica is a licensed clinical psychologist and Director of Behavioral Health services at AVHC. She completed her postdoctoral residency at UC Berkeley in 2002 with a strong desire to work and live in a rural setting. "My first taste of the valley was living and working at Wellspring Renewal Center in Philo the summer of 2002. It was there that I realized the indelible connection we all have to one another in our small community and I felt compelled to offer my services to the valley that had given me so much. I feel honored that community members entrust me with their stories and am often moved by the indomitable spirit of those who live here. For some patients, my role is to help them weather difficult emotional crises such as the death of a loved one, physical or sexual trauma, loss of employment, marriage problems, substance use, or coping with a serious disease. Sometimes having a neutral person to process raw emotion during times of distress can make all the difference. For others, I provide psychological "tools" to relieve depression and anxiety. I have found that mindfulness training empowers people to consciously alter their response to life in a more open, peaceful manner and I will usually teach these skills to those who are interested in them."
"I am intrigued by the burgeoning fields of neuropsychology and neuroscience and so I often provide patients with information regarding ways to consciously direct the mind to optimize brain functioning for psychological health. Those that have worked with me in the past know that I often discuss the power of neuroplasticity--the ability to consciously change brain chemistry and grow healthy neural connections via skillful, mindful ways of focusing thoughts and directing behaviors. Simply asking oneself, "does this thought, emotion, or behavior serve me?" can be a powerful catalyst for change. I truly love teaching these skills because I get to watch people grow into their fuller potential."
